The birth: Félix

 photo birthstory2.jpg
I had been certain towards the end of my pregnancy that this baby was going to be early. I had been feeling a lot of pressure on my cervix for weeks and it just felt different. Perhaps it was wishful thinking. My due date (16 December) came and went, and I started feeling fed up and very tired. This time around, pregnancy was hard with an energetic and strong-willed toddler.

My midwife started talking about appointments with doctors to discuss induction. I ate curries, went for long walks on the evenings that weren’t too hot, and had a long, blissful induction massage. The days crept closer and closer to Christmas. I tried not to imagine dashing off to the birth centre mid Christmas dinner.

On a hot and humid Friday afternoon we all set off for a swim in the village pool.  All week I had been sitting on the sidelines, not willing to squeeze into my (non maternity) bathers, but this time I longed for the cool water. Saskia swam happily with K and her little cousins, and my sister-in-law suggested I bob gently around the pool. I enjoyed the feeling of weightlessness and buoyancy.

That evening as I sat on the sofa, I found it difficult to get comfortable. I felt restless and a little out of sorts. I kissed K goodnight and thought I’d head to bed to rest and find a comfortable position.

I woke at around 3.45am to some very mild waves. I lay in bed for the next hour, observing the sensations. The contractions stayed light but seemed close together. I tried to remember what our midwife had said about when to come in. Saskia and K were sleeping soundly beside me.

Wanting to make a plan for Saskia’s care and finish packing the few remaining things for the hospital bag, I woke K. He told me he felt much more flustered this time around, which I found surprising.

The waves started to increase a little in intensity around 5.30am so we went upstairs and I called my parents to let them know our baby was close, and to come and stay with Saskia. I had been using Ujjayi breathing since waking and was comforted by how familiar it felt. The contractions were coming regularly and quickly, but felt manageable and still quite mild. As each one began I would get on all fours. I didn’t want to be upright or lying down.

Close to 6am we heard Saskia call out, Mama. K went down to the bedroom to settle her but she kept asking for me. I waddled down the stairs and when I walked into the bedroom a wave began. I crawled up and onto the bed next to Saskia. No Mama, over dere, she cried, pointing to my side of the bed. I couldn’t believe my two year old was bossing me around in the middle of birthing. I chose to do what would involve the least amount of pain and hoisted myself up, mid contraction, and crawled around to the other side of the bed. K and Saskia rubbed my back through the next few waves. I felt so grateful that she had woken and was able to play a small part in the birth.

Mum and Dad arrived and took Saskia upstairs to have breakfast. We called our lovely midwife (who had been present at Saskia’s birth also) and told her that contractions were now coming regularly, every couple of minutes or so, and she suggested we make our way in to the Birth Centre. As we collected our bags and grabbed last minute additions I started to get a feeling of wanting to push. It wasn’t strong, but I could sense it was building. I think we better get going quickly, I said to K, I think I might need to push soon. We hurried out of the door, waving goodbye to Sassy and my parents. They were about to take her for an early morning walk around the Village, and then Mum was going to make her way in to meet us, as I was wanted her to be at the birth again.

Again, the car ride felt so surreal (I remember this part so vividly from Saskia’s birth). It was 6.30am and the sun was bright and warm already. I texted friends in between contractions to let them know I was on my way to birth.

We arrived at the Birth Centre around 6.45am and made our way to the room. I remember walking down the quiet corridors, thinking how lovely it smelt (I think our midwife had put out some oils) and how deliciously cool it was. In the room the curtains were drawn and the beautiful, oversized bath was beginning to fill. The rushing sound of water was soothing.

I asked for a mat and a Swiss ball, still wanting to breath through each contraction on all fours. The intensity was starting to increase, so I stayed quiet and focussed. K played my meditation through the iPhone and I continued with the Ujjayi breathing. The desire to push was also increasing and I asked if the bath was nearly ready but my midwife said it would take another 40 minutes to fill. I was craving the water.

Contractions were coming one after the other and I started to feel the druggy haze of birth hormones. My eyelids felt heavy and I remained quiet, still focussed on the breath and trying to conserve energy. K rubbed my back and gave me sips of water. I remember feeling overcome with love for him. So gentle and caring and aware. I felt so safe and confident with him beside me.

Finally the bath was ready and K helped me up the stairs and into the water. I can still remember how wonderful it was to sink into the deep, warm pool. My body seemed to melt as I lowered myself in. Almost immediately, my body began to push. I think I’m pushing, Denise, I said, a little shocked by the force of what my body was doing. It was such a strange sensation. The muscles in my body were labouring for me, and I was being guided by their work. Birthing Saskia I remember actively pushing (for almost an hour and a half), but this felt very different. I embraced the feeling and put my head down on K’s arm. He will want me to write that I bit him (I did).

After that first push, I knew immediately that it had brought the baby close. I reached down and could feel a big patch of my baby’s head. I was surprised. So soon? Another couple of pushes and your baby will be out, our midwife said calmly. I almost believed her, the pushes were so strong and forceful, but surely not?

I could feel another push building. I was leaning on the side of the bath with my head close to K. With each push I would press into the side of the bath and lift my bottom up. K told me afterwards that he would look down my back and watch muscles almost ‘emerge’ and ripple with each push (there’s been no sight of them since!).

On the third or forth push, our baby’s head appeared. Here comes your baby’s head, the midwife said. Next push and you’ll have a baby. We were both so shocked. Whoa, whoa, whoa, just wait! said K (to no one in particular, I suppose!).

I remained leaning on the bath and with the last push, our midwife took his shoulders, turned him slightly and helped to ease him out untangling the cord (it had been wrapped around his neck). She placed him on my back as I steadied myself. What is it? I asked K. The midwife turned him over. A little boy, K smiled.

I turned around and sat on the bath’s bench. I held my little boy close and listened to him cry his first cry. I felt so thankful for his safe, swift and straightforward arrival. Both K and I were still so shocked by how quickly he had come – and without fuss (I didn’t tear). I felt tired, but beyond elated, like I had run a marathon, but was ready to do it all again (thank you, birth hormones). I moved to the bed, settled in for a feed and waited for his proud big sister and grandparents to arrive…

Little One Baby magazine

Oh dear. I've not been here in this space much lately and now when I do post it's a blatant brag!

Saskia's room was featured in the latest issue of Little One Baby magazine. Photos were taken earlier this year by the super sweet Masha of Masha Zaric photography - and words were threaded by that talented creative spirit, Jodi.

It was hard to tell who was most proud about the article, and I think it's a tough call between Vovo (K's mum, who almost shed tears and kept repeating over and over again in Portuguese, oh what a beautiful family) and Grandfather (who managed to hunt down a copy of the magazine hours after it hit the stands). Despite a slighly goofy family portrait (!) I know it will make a treasured keepsake. Thank you Masha and Jodi and Little One Baby.

If you pick up a copy of the magazine, there is also a feature on Otis and Casper's room from How We Montessori. I adore their simple and thoughtfully considered spaces. Just a little in awe of Kylie...

The First Birthday Party

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
I have some beautiful memories of the Little One's first birthday party, held last weekend in the Village community centre. Walking through the gate to the courtyard, holding her on my hip, her tutu sticking out from under the baby belly, a crocheted crown on her head, and feeling a little teary as her little cousins called her name in excitement. My doting, big-hearted parents and my mother-in-law hard at work, preparing food and greeting guests. Watching friends and family (re)connect. K's heartfelt speech. Her little cheer as everyone hip hip hoorayed for her. Our little cuddle in the midst of the party, in acknowledgement of such a special occasion. Sass and her little boyfriend Archie, chalking graffiti on the courtyard walls.

It was a big party, an enormous amount of work, but oh so worth it. She is so very loved, our Little One.

We made the classic mistake of not taking many photos on the day (I am thankful for friends and family who picked up our camera or emailed through their own captures). Above are the party left overs that are still scattered about our home. I just can't bring myself to put them away, just yet...

One

Your first birthday, Little One....and wasn't it magical?

The day started with cuddles in bed, as all birthdays should. Mama and Dada read aloud their birthday messages and opened parcels sent from special people across the seas. Your dearest little friend came over for a pikelet picnic on the living room floor. You greeted each other with the widest smiles, and she gave you beautiful gifts, carefully considered (she knows you so well). The rain drizzled outside and the kettle boiled. Mama iced a cake while you napped and thought about the birth day, this time a year ago.

JanMa and Grandfather took us out to the gallery after lunch. You seemed most taken with Leger, Olsen and the brass fittings on the floor. You walked, and walked, and walked. We ordered you a babycino and you lapped it up with a look that said, I could get used to this. You left the cafe hand-in-hand with your Dada. At night, before bed, we sung Happy Birthday and you were mesmerised by the candle's flame. You went to sleep stowing away beautiful memories of a special day.

Saskia Rose, our lives are so much sweeter and richer with you in them. We love you with all our might. Happy first birthday Little One x

The wind in her hair

Photobucket
...oh she loves it, my Little One.

This is one of those things I don't want to forget. The first time it happened I almost ran the car off the road.

On warm days we drive with the windows down. She giggles with delight as the wind blows her hair upright, and she gasps with every blast and gust. Her legs kicking and arms thrown up in excitement. Pure ecstasy.

Could there be anything more wonderful than the feeling of wind in your hair?
...
Speaking of beautiful memories, I am feeling so inspired by the memorykeeping of this Mama. I've finally ordered a special handcrafted journal for the Little One's baby book, which I can't wait to arrive on our doorstep...and I'm so very taken with Project Life (especially Ronnie's clean and focused approach) that I'll be starting up on January 1, 2012. Yikes, there it is in writing...

*I just can't decide where to put my dream catcher - a treasure from this short and sweet holiday. At the moment it is strung up on our balcony where I can see it from my favourite armchair. It's been my most favourite purchase in a long time.

Oh no she di'int....

DSC_0820
...oh yes, she did. Little One took her first steps over a week ago. Must have been all that practise on the block trolley.

That, and her fierce determination and desire to be on the move.

More of that adorable romper in the 11 month portraits coming up.....
(remember that one?)

Meu nome e

her star
We always loved your name, Saskia.

It was a clear favourite. Lots of other girls names were bandied around, written against our two last names, added to the list, but it was always to be...Saskia Rose.

I had once read an article about a talented and beautiful florist in a Dumbo Feather magazine (Issue 20), and mentally scribbled her name on my list of favourites. I thought of a dark haired little girl.

It's funny how quickly the conversation turns to names when you discover that you're pregnant. There were so many breakfasts, lunches, dinners at our dining table spent discussing names. My Mum, a primary school teacher, told me she taught a lovely little girl called Saskia and I was immediately reminded of that sweet name.

Your middle name, Rose, is in memory of your Great Grandmother, my Granny. I always think about how she would adore you. Just adore you.

If we talk about names, we also have to talk about nicknames (that was always my favourite page in my baby book)...

Sassy
Sassy Lassie
Sasky
Lassie
Chu-chuka or chuka or Tu-tuka (Papa's special names for you...there's a little song that goes along with it - and you always give it a bit of 'crazy head')
The Sass (Aunty Meas and Uncle Rich)
Kiki or Kikkies
Sax
Cracker/Firecracker
Little One
Schnoster
Spangle dangs
Schnoggle bog (the last three being Grandfather's work)

*My blog name actually comes from my father's nickname for me as a young child - Oscar Lucinda. There's some debate as to where the Oscar came from (Lucinda is my middle name)...it's either that I was a bit of an actress as a little one or a big old grouch. Some say both. Rude, I know.

One for the baby book

DSC_0487
Little One woke up yesterday morning with the tip of a little white tooth peeking through her bottom gums. I just caught a glimpse as she laughed. She's kept it well hidden since, but both Mama and Papa have felt the little ridges. Her first tooth!

There haven't been any red cheeks or much crankiness at all. Just super long naps during the day. For the moment...

*Photo taken on our visit to Norma. On a rare moment that she'll eat in 'public' (it always helps that someone other than Mama does the feeding). Since the little tooth has appeared though, her appetite has disappeared. Hmmmmm...

The knitted dress

Your Mama wore this knitted dress when she was a baby, Saskia. And she was photographed on that bed, in that very same room. The beautiful dress was lovingly made by her Granny, your great-grandmother. She would have adored you.

6 months

6 months and the Little One...
...is sitting up like a little lady (and has been for a few weeks now) reaching out for toys...and her Mama's arms when she's tired (melt)
...just adores her Grandfather...a daily visitor, straight from school, 'just dropping off the paper'
...has been surprising her Mama with 2 x 2 hour sleeps a day
...loves playing with wooden blocks (and sending them tumbling), stacking rings, the noisy yellow car and the little blue-capped driver, wormie (always wormie), and is mesmerised by the spinning top
...squeals, squarks, babbles, giggles...
...is rarely quiet...and still (exhausting, but I love this so)
...gets up on all fours and rocks back and forth, as if to propel herself forward
...slept through her first Easter egg hunt in Vovo's garden
...uses those beautifully chubby hands to ever-so delicately lift objects, inspecting from all angles, using both hands without a clear preference
...is fondly referred to as Little Firecracker by Tia Carla, and is collecting quite a few other nicknames already
...doesn't believe in clean windows
...makes her mama and papa realise they are living the life they always hoped they'd live

Saskia, on your 6 month birthday you said goodbye to your Vovo. He loved you with all his heart, my darling. He was so happy he was able to meet you.
