Here comes the train.....

firstmeal firstmeal3
Her first meal on the weekend. It was quite an event.

The little bunny set brought out for occasion. Cameras at the ready. Best bib chosen. And she didn't want to disappoint, swallowing spoonfuls and opening her mouth for more. But her expression said, I'm not so sure....

I was reluctant to start solids (she seems so little still) but we noticed her watching and reaching every time we'd lift a fork or glass to our mouths. Since her first two meals though, she's barely swallowed a spoonful. Did we jump the gun? Or is it just that Farex aint the most tasty dish on the menu?

  1. She looks so cute! Try Rafferty's Garden Organic Baby Rice, they do multigrain and banana and apricot flavours.. it tastes a lot nicer than Farex :)

    1. Just saw your posts...and have been meaning to get out to Watson Arts Centre for ages, so might just have to do that soon!

Yup, have visited Handmade (and been to the markets...on this weekend too, I believe)...Think it's the best place to pick up a Canberra souvenir (the bus roll tea towel)

  3. I was the same and tried solids with my LO once I noticed he was watching us eat. He wasn't ready so I delayed it until he was almost 6 months and it worked a charm.

    1. I think we are actually going to give it a break for a while....the watching and reaching might just be her naturally curious personality perhaps...

  4. Olive didn't start to really eat big meals until after she turned 1, and you hear so many differing opinions but a lovely community health nurse told me at a check up that food was just for fun before 1. We skipped the rice cereal and just went straight to fruit and veg which is easier on their immature digestive system. But you'll find something that works for you guys. What I mainly wanted to say was that it's completely normal for them not to each much to start with. I love the look on her face! Kellie xx

    1. When we're ready to go again, think we'll try the fruit and veg angle...a few other friends have suggested this approach too...thanks for your gentle words of encouragement x

  5. So cute! I love her darling bib :)

Some of the best advice I received about parenting was about delaying solids and using minimal purees. We waited until Everly was 6 months and started with some pureed fruit and vegetables (no farex or grain based stuff) as well as finger foods like steamed sweet potato, wedges of avocado etc. Everly is now 9 months old and is such a good eater! It makes meal times so much easier too as she eats whatever we eat (which in turn, makes me eat healthier and concentrate on balanced meals). The philosophy is called Baby Led Weaning http://www.babyledweaning.com/. I found this page to be helpful too: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html

Everly appeared to be interested in food around 4.5 months, but apparently this is really common (they are just starting to be more aware of their surroundings, so everything is interesting!). It's recommended to wait until they can sit up by themselves, and they are also grabbing food from your plate. Everly did this a week before she turned 6 months.

Good luck Mumma :) Saskia is amazingly beautiful! xxx

    1. thanks for the links...i've heard a lot about this BLW business...so now we are delying solids for a while, I'll have time to read up on this, I think...gosh, I read 1000 books on pregnancy and thought I'd be the same when it came to something like this, but it just felt as though it crept up on us and I didn't have time to scurry about devouring information!

  6. Farex is revolting!!
I started my first around 4.5 months because it was in vogue in those days (she's 18 now). My other two started about 6 -7 months and it was much easier. I dont' think farex lasted long - I used to mix it with apples or pears to make it more appetising.
I can't believe she is already 4 months old!

  7. Could she be any cuter in that photo.
Farex tastes like mushy paper - YUKKO!
My kids would never eat it.
Apple and pear - now that is delicious, but try not to worry. She will work it out when she is ready.

  8. From what I've heard the old rice cereal 'aint much of a hit. Must be very disappointing for them after all that curiosity! We are yet to venture down the solids path so can't offer much in the way of advice but check this out:

http://ten.com.au/ten-search.htm?q=rice+cereal&x=0&y=0 download the first pdf on the list and then here too

Maybe home made brown rice cereal would be tastier?! x

  9. Look at her little face! Can't believe she's already eating real food. Time goes so fast. I'll have to remember to pop back to this post for all the advice when Josephine's time comes! XX

  10. As if your reading list isn't long enough already, but I just borrowed "Wholefood for Children" by Judy Blereau from the Canberra library and it is fantastic. Covers first foods right through to 7 years. Also just discovered that avocado and banana make a fab puree - 2 superfoods combined and my little boy can't get enough of it! Claire

    1. Thanks Claire! Am back into devouring information now (this post has kickstarted me!), so appreciate the suggestion :) Have just requested the book through the library service (there seemed to be quite a few copies) x

  11. don't fret! our little bean is almost 8 months old and she just starting showing REAL interest in food about two weeks ago. i tried the purees but she was not impressed and i tried other things but, really, it just seemed to click overnight with her: she just starting eating whatever we offered. and "grabbing" or "watching" isn't always necessarily involved. it's just that now she will open her mouth when we offer her (anything that is NOT on a spoon) and not spit it out.

we skipped the slow introduction of plain food and have jumped straight to offering her whatever whole foods we are eating. her first real meal was a kurdish soup we got at a restaurant! so i guess we learned, and what i want to share with you, is don't be afraid of jumping into the "adult" stuff and don't be afraid of spices and seasoning.

    LOVE your cute little blog!

  12. hey hon, I cant resist jumping in too to say YES check out BabyLed Weaning if you have the time or inclination! I did it w both kids and made solids a true joy (though a messy joy i admit!!). Just like breastfeeding, it allows kid to eat when they are ready, how much they need and to their own ability. not saying its the only way or best way etc but just that i loved the philosophy and loved it in action. Oh and as for the food watching - if you were juggling knives 3 times a day, she would want in on that too!! yes they are curious and fascinated little creatures, especially wanting in on what we are doing! enjoy finding the best food path for your little cherub, its such a privilege!

    1. Yes, I'm going to have to look into this further...I got a little scared off it earlier on by friends saying they couldn't handle seeing their baby choke...
....but I'm beginning to think that this approach might suit little Saskia

  13. Hey sweetie, there's so much pressure around solids and I wholeheartedly agree in following your baby. I'll also chime in and encourage you to start with fruit and veg - it's more gentle on the digestive system as opposed to grains. Che didn't really get into food until 8 months. Poet? Well, she loves it and I've been more confident giving her half an apple to chew on instead of puree'ing everything. Listen to Saskia, she'll tell you when she's ready for more x
